Sports Betting and Online Gambling Billing Passed in Michigan
About a week ago, representatives in the Michigan House finally managed to pass the Lawful Internet Gaming Act. It was supported by 68 legislators. It would be important to note that the bill had been tabled since January. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Brandt Iden and will allow for the licensing of casinos in the state. As a result, it will provide better forms of Internet gambling and online poker. The three major casinos in Detroit, MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown Casino, and MotorCity Casino and Hotel, will be able to provide these services as soon as the new year. With the passage of the bill, all the games that are currently offered within the physical premises of the casinos will be available on the Internet.
The essence of the bill
According to the bill’s sponsor, the taxes from the online gambling services shall be channeled to four areas of the economy. The City of Detroit will receive the lion’s share of the revenue, followed by the Internet Gaming Fund, which is tasked with the administration of the online gambling program. Transportation and education will receive the remaining 10 percent. The tribal casinos that are in the state of Michigan will have to adjust and fully replace their compacts before being allowed to offer online gambling services. The state will take 8 percent of the revenue earned from online gambling as a tax.
The bill will also provide a slot for agreements between more than one jurisdiction This means that a lawyer has the right to preside over contracts beyond his or her assigned area. For a person to participate in the online gambling activities, he or she must be at least 21. The bill contains a sustainable framework for lawful sports betting. All the same, the Michigan Game Control Board will have to legalize it all over the state.
History of the Bill
The bill had actually been tabled before, in 2017. However, it is the intricacies that characterized the reform efforts in the gambling industry that delayed everything. The reality is that most of the citizens were already playing online. In fact, online gaming became so popular that it no longer occurred to people that it was against the law. At this point, it was only fair that the desires of the majority be granted.
Initially, the federal government had intended to do away with all online gambling activities in the country, and PASPA was enacted. The recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said states have the right to decide whether they want to offer sports betting services has made things more complex for the leaders on the federal level. Interestingly, there are those who believe the debate on the legality and acceptability of the online betting is irrelevant. Several betting companies have received the bill with open arms.
On the face of it, the passage of this gambling bill in Michigan is one that has been met with both positive and negative opinions. The fact that the House was almost divided in half means that not every member of the legislature is comfortable with the bill. It would, therefore, not be prudent to close the doors on this debate. Gambling is an activity that has, in some cases, financially crippled families. Encouraging it would, therefore, provide extra outlets to create worse economic situations in the state. Since people will no longer have to travel to brick-and-mortar casinos, the number of gamblers will increase. To some of them, this cannot be anything better than corporate conmanship.
