Hundreds of jobs to come with Adelaide casino expansion
The Adelaide Casino has received approval for an expansion that will bring nearly 1,000 jobs to the city and state of South Australia.
The casino, which is on the north end of the city near the city center, has been in operation since 1985.
The AUS $330 million expansion did not require a new gaming license because the casino is not adding any new gambling opportunities. Instead, it is expanding its amenities and the VIP level gambling rooms. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2020.
The casino, which is housed in an old railway station, currently operates 90 gaming tables and 950 machines. The casino also has a concert venue, restaurants, and stores. It is South Australia’s 10th largest employer and pays the state close to $50 million in taxes yearly.
The expansion of the casino will contain a new luxury hotel with 123 rooms and 12 floors. In addition, the space will contain a large room that will hold 750 people and can be used for business or social functions. The casino will add a rooftop bar as well. The rooftop bar has room for small gatherings or exclusive VIP parties. While the casino already has outdoor bars that compete with other bars in the area, the casino hopes its new luxury rooftop bar will attract more people to the casino. Three new luxury restaurants will also be added in the expansion. The development will be in keeping with the overall redevelopment plan of Adelaide’s City Center and the added push by the state government to be competitive in the tourism industry.
In addition to the luxury rooftop bar and hotel, perhaps, the part that has caused the most interest and push back from the South Australian government has been the addition of the high luxury VIP gaming rooms. The casino has mentioned the purpose of the new gaming rooms, as well as the hotel, bars, and restaurants, is to attract high-end gamblers to the area, which will increase its revenue. The high-end gamblers would not just be coming from Australia, but from other countries in Oceania as well. The objective of the South Australian government is to attract more jobs and revenue, so it can compete with other tourist destinations in Australia, such as Sydney and Melbourne.
The high-end gambling rooms have been the subject of many conversations between the South Australian government and the casino. The two entities had been negotiating for more than two years on the scope of the gaming rooms, who would be allowed in, and the process for admitting gamblers into the casino rooms. The casino had to agree the premium gambling rooms would not be open to people with gambling addiction problems and there would be restrictions placed on the number of licenses that would be granted to gamblers to enter the gaming rooms. In addition, the casino will upgrade its security to prevent problem gamblers from accessing the gaming rooms. The premium rooms will include several high-limit poker tables, which appear to be a favorite with premium gamblers.
The casino expansion also had to clear a hurdle with the South Australian government in regard to historical preservation. The Adelaide Rail Station, which has been in operation since 1856, is a heritage property. Therefore, any renovations made to the property must be cleared with the government first. The new casino and hotel complex will not change the historical value of the property.
While the casino is expected to add 800 permanent jobs once the expansion is complete, the casino will also be employing 1,000 people for the construction jobs that come with the expansion, which will create additional jobs and revenue for the state.
