Hudson Valley Casino Attracting High Rollers and Celebrity Gamblers
There are twenty-five casinos located in the state of New York, which gives gamblers a lot of opportunities to gamble. However, casinos located in the Hudson Valley have attracted a lot of attention. Currently, there are four casinos located in the valley that are catering to upscale gambling. With the opening of the fourth casino, Resorts World Catskills, the valley is poised to rival Atlantic City in attracting high rollers and celebrities from New York City and elsewhere.
The Hudson Valley Casinos
All of the Hudson Valley casinos have opened within the last three years after the New York General Assembly passed legislation to add casinos to the Hudson Valley. Del Lago Casinos in Waterloo offers a gambling floor with nearly 2,000 machines and ninety-nine gambling tables with fourteen dedicated poker tables. The casino also offers over 200 rooms designed as suites as well as spa services. Additionally, the casino boasts an entertainment venue. It cost $400 million to build, but so far it has been the least successful of the casinos located in the Hudson Valley, struggling to make its projected goals and falling short by $100 million.
With nearly 1,200 slots and 70 gambling tables, Rivers Casino and Resort is smaller than Del Lago. The hotel is about the same size as Del Lago and offers rooms and suites. The resort also offers spa services. Like Del Lago, Rivers Casino is struggling to meet projections as well, with revenue of $2 million per week as opposed to the $4 million per week that were projected.
Tioga Downs Casino and Resort differs from both Del Lago and Rivers Casinos in that the casino offers harness racing on site. The hotel has 160 guest rooms, and the casino offers nearly 1,000 slot machines, thirty-two table games, and a room dedicated to the World Series of Poker. The resort also offers a golf course. While Tioga Downs is performing better than the other two casinos, revenue from the casino is still below projections.
The Resorts World Catskills Grand Opening and Strategy for Attracting High Rollers
The Resorts World Catskills Casino and Resort is the largest operation in the Catskills. It opened in February 2018 at the cost of over $2.1 billion. From the beginning, the casino, because it is the closest to New York City, aimed to attract celebrities and high rollers. The resort had a gala in February with a lot of celebrities from the New York area such as Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor, Neil Patrick Harris, and Adrian Grenier. Jerry Seinfeld performed opening weekend as well.
The casino aims to attract high rollers and celebrities with its amenities already in place. The casino floor is the largest in the area at 100,000 square feet, with 150 table games and 2,100 slot machines. What is really attracting attention is the 5,000 square foot poker room, and the high-roller, high-luxury room with a VIP-only lounge. A sports bar, also with a VIP area, is poised to offer sports gambling, popular with both high rollers and celebrities, as soon as the state approves sports gambling, which is expected to happen quickly.
Will the Resorts World Catskills Beat Projections?
It remains to be seen whether the newest casino in the Hudson Valley will be able to perform better than the other three. Critics have charged that the casino market in the Northeast is saturated, especially with Indian casinos and Atlantic City in close proximity. However, Resorts World Catskills is optimistic about finding a niche with celebrities and high rollers and remaining a fixture in the valley.
