Johannesburg -- One of the convicted Worcester bombers has abandoned his racist beliefs with the help of Eugene de Kock and now believes he was manipulated by an Israel Vision sect leader.
"I'm sorry for what I have done. For the rest of my life I will be branded as the Worcester bomber, murderer of three children. Had I been older, I would never have done it," Stefan Coetzee has told a friend, Morné Fourie.
Coetzee (25) intends filing for appeal against his 40-year-sentence.
Fourie says Coetzee occupies a prison cell next to De Kock's at the Pretoria Maximum Security Prison. De Kock appears to have taught Coetzee to be humble and fair at all times in spite of race, religion or gender.
As a 19-year-old, Coetzee admitted guilt to 11 charges of murder, sabotage and a contravention of the Internal Security Act.
Earlier the State had indicated he would be granted amnesty under section 204 of the Crimnal Procedures Act if he turned state witness and testified against sect leader Jan van der Westhuizen. Coetzee refused, as he regarded Van der Westhuizen as a second father.
Together with AWB members Koper Myburgh and Cliffie Barnard, he was responsible for bomb blasts on December 24, 1996 at a shopping centre and pharmacy. Four people, including three children, died and 58 people were injured.
Van der Westhuizen reportedly told Coetzee to plead guilty to all the charges. He appears to have been told that his sentence would be "lighter" because of his young age.
